Vasant Panchami festival is devoted to Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of wisdom, music, arts, science & technology. This day is also known as Shri Panchami or Saraswati Panchami. Falling on the fifth(Panchami) tithi of the month of Magha, this festival is considered the first day of spring - Vasant. 

About Saraswati Puja:

Hindus worldwide celebrate Vasant Panchami with gusto as Saraswati's birthday. Saraswati, symbolises the Goddess of knowledge of  Temples and academic institutions are full of activity on this day in due respect to Goddess  Saraswati People worship Goddess Saraswati Devi to get enlightened with wisdom and get rid of sluggishness and ignorance. People wear yellow clothes & prepare saffron rice as part of the yellowish confections they offer each other since this is the colour of prosperity & love. 

Young children are taught to write the alphabet or their first words as part of Aksharabhyasam or Vidyarambham as an auspicious beginning to learning, while their elders clean their pens & inkwells.

Rituals of Saraswati Devi Puja:

Saraswati Devi Puja is a popular puja performed in almost every Indian household. The rituals that are commonly performed in this puja are as follows:

  1. Offer your prayers to the Goddess of knowledge on Panchami of Magh month Shukla paksha, also known as Vasant Panchami. Chant the below mantra with bakthi and concentration.

Ya Kundendu-Tushara-Hara-Dhavala,
Ya Shubhra-Vastravrita,
Ya Vina-Vara-Danda-Mandita-Kara,
Ya Shveta-Padmasana?
Ya Brahmachyuta-Shankara-Prabhritibhir
Devaih Sada Vandita,
Sa Mam Patu Saraswati Bhagawati
Nihshesha-Jadyapaha?

  1. Take an oath that you would complete the rituals wholeheartedly.

  2. Offer Vastra, kumkum, Pushpa, Jewellery, and Naivedhya along with Tambulam. 

Perform aarti and offer pushpanjali to Maa Saraswathi at last.

Describing Basant Panchami/Vasant Panchami:

In North India, this day is celebrated as Basant Panchami or as the festival of kites. Predominantly it is celebrated in eastern parts of India as Saraswathi Puja. In South India, this festival is called Sri Panchami. In which yagnas are performed, and people worship Goddess Saraswati and celebrate with lots of devotion. 

Depicting Maa Saraswathi:

She has four arms, holds a book, a rosary, a water pot, and a musical instrument called Veena. Individually all of these items have a symbolic significance in Hinduism. 

  1. The four arms represent the mirror of the four heads of her husband, Brahma which again  represents manas, buddhi, citta, and ahamk?ra 

  2. The book she bears exemplifies the Vedas symbolising the universal, holy, boundless, and true wisdom and all forms of learning.

  3.  An m?l? made of crystals represents the strength of meditation, internal contemplation, and spirituality.

  4. The water pot symbolises soma – the drink that delivers and guides knowledge.

  5. The most notable feature of goddess Saraswati is Veena. Veena of Saraswati Devi denotes all creative arts and sciences, and her holding it implies voicing knowledge that creates harmony. 

  6. A hamsa/ a swan is always shown close to her feet. It hence represents the power to distinguish between good and evil, drifting from the external world.
